Self Catering in Clanwilliam

Home to one of the largest successful breeding colonies of African Penguin in the world. A national monument steeped in history, with prehistoric rocks and Stone Age artefacts. Cape Canopy Tour takes you deep into the pristine fynbos folds of a World Heritage Site. As soon as the weather patterns leading up to the storm of 7 and 8 June 2017 was identified, the CapeNature management teams of the two precious African Penguin colonies on Dyer Island and Stony Point, started with earnest preparations to minimise the loss of birds, as well as limit any possible damage to infrastructure. We ask that people refrain from trying to access these areas to allow firefighters and emergency services to proceed with necessary operations. Biodiversity is concerned with the kind of world, and the kind of land, that we want to live in and to pass on to our children and grandchildren. The Wild Card is a world-class loyalty programme that makes tourism to national parks and nature reserves in Southern Africa more accessible and rewarding than ever before. Kliphuis in the Cederberg offers three newly refurbished chalets. Stay on the marked trails and jeep track to prevent soil erosion. When hiking, carry water bottles, sunblock, walking stick, hats. South Africa has 13 species of tortoise and eight are found in the Western Cape alone. Tortoises are very slow, so they struggle to move away from danger when crossing busy roads or when there is a fire. The geometric tortoise is endangered, which means it is at risk of becoming extinct (dying out). It eats very specific plants, so when farmers use a tortoise’s home for farming, it can’t find the food it needs. Tortoises are wild animals and generally do not make good pets. If you find a tortoise in the middle of a road, pick it up and place it safely in the direction it was moving. If you find a tortoise on its back, turn it over onto its feet and allow it to walk away. Tortoises like to be alone, so if you find one by itself that does not mean it is lost. Water evaporates from the surface of oceans into the atmosphere, forms clouds, falls onto the land as rain, travels through wetlands, rivers, lakes and underground, before returning to the ocean. The water you drink from a tap comes from lakes, rivers or ground water such as boreholes or wells. Biodiversity is the different kinds of life on earth, including animals and plants, the places they live and their surrounding environments. Biodiversity gives us the clean air we breathe, the water we drink and the natural beauty around us. Ensure that a fire is extinguished properly with water, once you are finished with the fire. Shower instead of taking a bath (or don’t fill the tub if you prefer bathing). Water your garden in the cooler early morning or evening hours to avoid rapid evaporation. If you see a tortoise in the road, pick it up and place it safely in the direction it was moving. Do not disturb or take wild animals out of their natural habitat. Turn off your geyser when it isn’t being used or turn the temperature down. Make more use of public transport and bicycles, especially for short journeys.
